A Bicycle Business with Family Roots

The Dillglove story and association with cycling started way back in the 1870s with the British bicycle component manufacturing plant, T D Cross and Sons Limited, that traded until the 1980s.

Despite difficult market conditions, the two remaining Directors, brothers John and Richard Cross, were determined to remain within the bicycle industry and, with the financial help of Alfred Thun Snr, they formed Dillglove Limited in April 1982.

Fast forward 40 years, and John and Richard have been succeeded by John’s son-in-law Bryan McQueen and Richard’s daughter Debbie, with granddaughter Missy recently joining the team to assist with marketing, their legacy, founding principles and passion for the bicycle industry remain very much alive.

This is a firm with the most outstanding and attentive client service. In my search for a saddle with heavy padding around the sit bones, Debbie remained unfailingly kind and ultra-efficient as I changed my mind, asked for test saddles to be sent overseas, then arranged for pick up. And again… She seemed to have only one concern in mind which she pursued way beyond what I thought was reasonable: Helping me find the right saddle for me. This is a very rare commodity nowadays. Selle SMP saddles, if you are reading this review about SMP saddles then you are contemplating buying one, simply "BUY ONE". These saddles do exactly what they say they do, they are the most comfortable saddles I have tried, both on the bike and no pain afterwards off the bike. Don't let the price put you off, as what price do you put on comfort if you spend hours in the saddle. The service I received from Dillglove was 5 star, they lent me as many different SMP saddles as I needed until I found the right one for me. Being able to try before you buy takes the risk out of the price as you can decide for yourself. If you contact them they will advise what may be best for you as a starting point, so I am a happy customer. In fact I bought 2, 1 for my road bike and 1 for my hybrid, both different saddles that suit different riding style.

I decided to investigate Selle SMP saddles having been increasingly unhappy with my current saddle for some time, and having read very positive reviews in the cycling press. I contacted the distributor Dillglove directly as they offer a test facility, and they invited me up to their office to try the range and decide which ones I wanted to take away for an on the bike test. Debbie at Dillglove was welcoming and very helpful, and had setup a range of different models for me to try on their test tripods. I narrowed it down to 2 models, the Drakon and the Dynamic for testing on my bike. The ability to try the different models, and then test them on my bike for a couple of weeks proved invaluable in helping me finally select the Drakon as my next saddle. Super service. I’ve been getting discomfort from my saddle on my bike in the gym which is connected to a turbo trainer. I tend to be fairly stationary on the turbo unlike outdoors. I tried a saddle from these guys. They took a deposit and sent the saddle through quickly. It didn’t help so they sent me another two slightly different saddles. One of these worked so I bought it and returned the other two. A great way to try out a few saddles at the cost of the postage. Definitely worth a try if you want a new saddle.
